Ham Radio still thrives despite the internet
Interesting read…
Somehow it makes little sense that amateur “ham” radio continues to thrive in the age of Twitter, Facebook and iPhones. Yet the century-old communications technology — which demands such commitment that you must generally pass an exam to receive a license — currently attracts around 350,000 practitioners in Europe, and a further 700,000 in the United States, some 60 per cent more than 30 years ago.
Bear Hibernation == Suspended Animation?
I’m finding that there are a few definitions of suspended animation… here’s one:
In early winter, brown bears find a comfy spot in a cave or burrow that’s well-protected from the cold. Then they curl up, fall asleep, and don’t awaken or eat for 5 to 7 months. It’s called hibernation, and until now we weren’t really sure what happened in bears’ bodies during that time. How could they survive for half a year without food? Today, Science published the first comprehensive study of bear hibernation, which revealed that many of our assumptions about it were wrong.
What will suspended animation really be like? A new study offers hints.

The difference in features between GSM and CDMA
I had no idea you couldn’t put a call on hold on CDMA… funky…
iPhone supports many phone features, including call waiting, call forwarding, and conference calls. Depending on your wireless carrier’s network technology (GSM or CDMA), there are different methods for enabling and using these features.

Dumbphones dominate – not iPhones or Android
I’ve known this to be true for some time, but now there’s finally an article about it…
Its interesting to think that most of the people who read my blog have smartphones, and seeing people without a smartphone is probably a rare thing… but its clear we are the minority – dumbphones still rule the market.
Of the 234 million cell phone users in America last year, a dominating 73 percent own traditional (aka non-smart) devices, according to market researcher comScore. Despite their more popular mindshare, intelligent devices like the Apple iPhone and phones based on Google’s Android operating system own barely a quarter of the market.

What dying hard drives sound like
I’ve heard these sounds way to often when I go over to a friends house to “help them with their computer”… 🙂
These are some typical sounds we hear in our data recovery lab. If your hard drive makes noises like these and you are still able to access your files – backup immediately.

How genetics may not work…
Its funny how much we know about genetics, but yet we don’t…
When scientists opened up the human genome, they expected to find the genetic components of common traits and diseases. But they were nowhere to be seen. Brendan Maher shines a light on six places where the missing loot could be stashed away.

No-Left-Turn Superstreets
Didn’t mythbusters do a thing on this too? but with gas savings?
Comparative studies of Superstreet intersections and regular intersections by North Carolina State University have shown that overall, cars move through Superstreet intersections about 20% faster. There are 43% fewer accidents, and 63% fewer accidents that resulted in injuries. I’m sure it’s going to be difficult, if not impossible, to convince drivers that making three extra turns just to go in a straight line is actually the most efficient way to go, but for roads that are already bulging with cars, it might be worth the effort.
Superstreets make traffic 20% faster by eliminating left turns
