Weight Limits in Cars

Oct 08 2007

I had no idea cars had safety weight limits…

Many two-seat sports cars, including Mazda MX-5 Miata and Chevrolet (GM) Corvette, aren’t certified to carry two 200-pound adults, according to a government formula aimed at tire safety.

Car weight limits are a big, fat problem

The Millionaire Mind

Clever trick…

He told the loan officer that he was going to Philippines on business for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000. The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan.

Then the man handed over the keys to a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank

The Way We Walk

Oct 02 2007

This would explain the stomping you get over your head from your upstairs neighbors….

“No shirt, no shoes, no service.” It’s a common enough sign in store windows and other establishments, though, who would ever be seen without shoes? Shoes are essential to civilized life, and they bring with them a distinctly civilized manner of walking: lock the knee, and brace a controlled fall on the heel; roll the foot forward, rocking into another locked-knee heel-fall. It’s difficult to walk any other way while wearing shoes, and you’ll often find this described as the way humans walk. But of course, humans are not born with shoes on, nor did we evolve in shoes. Every human begins walking a different way, and needs to be meticulously trained to walk like this.

Sleeping

Sep 30 2007

Definitely unconventional…

I have a lifelong difficulty with falling asleep at night and then — even more problematic — staying asleep. I don’t have a medical cause for insomnia or any sleep disorders, just a brain that likes to go into overdrive when my body finally has a chance to lie down and rest.

Phones in Hospitals

Sep 28 2007

I guess we should all turn those phones off in hospitals…

Using mobile phones near hospital beds or important equipment is dangerous and could switch off ventilators or disrupt pacemakers, Dutch researchers said on Thursday.

Pure Chocolate

Sep 26 2007

At what point are you just eating ground-up beans?

The Lindt Excellence line of fine chocolate bars is widely available in the United States. Dark chocolate versions with 85% cocoa can be found with relative ease at chains as plebeian as Target. Such ubiquity is not shared by the 99% bar. For it, one must travel to a Lindt chocolate store. One exists in the Mall of America.

W00t! Eudora is back!

Eudora, the email client that introduced many in the earlier days of the internet to email, officially died May 1, although not that many people noticed. Qualcomm decided to open source the Eudora code and the good folks at Mozilla have resurrected the once great desktop email client.

Steve Jobs

Sep 07 2007

This has got to be my favorite post from Cringely this year…

This week’s iPhone pricing story, in which Apple punished its most loyal users by dropping the price of an 8-gig iPhone from $599 to $399 less than three months after the product’s introduction, is classic Steve Jobs. It wasn’t an accident.

Wealthy and Dull

Aug 19 2007

All tho’ this article makes a distinction between single digit millionaires and other wealthy people… This is pretty much the lesson that is taught in the book The Millionaire Next Door

If the 1980s created yuppies (young urban professionals) and the 1990s brought us bobos (bourgeois bohemians), the 2000s may be giving rise to a new kind of elite: yawns.

Yawns are “young and wealthy but normal.” They are men and women in their 30s and 40s who have become multimillionaires and billionaires during the wealth boom of the past decade. Yet rather than spending their money on yachts, boats and jets, yawns live modestly and spend most of their money on philanthropy.

Working Class Millionaires

Aug 17 2007

Maybe these people should move to Texas. 🙂

Mr. Steger, 51, a self-described geek, has banked more than $2 million. The $1.3 million house he and his wife own on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean is paid off. The couple’s net worth of roughly $3.5 million places them in the top 2 percent of families in the United States.

Yet each day Mr. Steger continues to toil in what a colleague calls “the Silicon Valley salt mines,” working as a marketing executive for a technology start-up company, still striving for his big strike. Most mornings, he can be found at his desk by 7. He typically works 12 hours a day and logs an extra 10 hours over the weekend.
