Houston

Mar 30 2007

When people find out that I just moved to Houston, they always ask “Why?”… or “Why not San Francisco?”

Well, here are some good reasons:

Top Cities for Jobs – Houston is #3 beating SF.

Top 10 Best / Worst Cities For Software Developer Pay – Houston is #1 (adjusted salary)

My buddy Nathan has a good write-up about it as well.

Sounds like a pretty good place to start a company (or two… or three) to me… 🙂

Huh? Am I starting a new company? shhhhh 😉

The bad side of CFL’s…

Mercury is poisonous, but it’s also a necessary part of most compact fluorescent bulbs, the kind that environmentalists and some governments are pushing as a way to cut energy use.

Pandora

Mar 19 2007

Buddy of mine showed me this today – its very, very cool. It can create a custom internet radio station of music you’ll (probably) like…

Pandora is a music discovery service designed to help you enjoy music you already know, and to help you discover new music you’ll love.

It’s powered by the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken, the Music Genome Project: a crazy project started back in early 2000 to capture the complex musical DNA of songs using a large team of highly-trained musicians.

Just tell us one of your favorite songs or artists and we’ll launch a streaming station to explore that part of the musical universe.

Regarding babies…

Feb 28 2007

Fewer babies…

“There are two reasons fertility rates can decline,” said J. David Hacker, a SUNY Binghamton historian. “One explanation is that marriage declines. Not as many women get married, and if they do marry, they do so at a later age, so that there is less time to have children. The second explanation is that people consciously try to limit having children, which was revolutionary in the 19th century.”

Why Women Have Fewer Babies

Smarter babies…

Women who eat seafood while pregnant may be boosting their children’s IQ in the process, according to new research published Friday in The Lancet. The results of the study were surprising, say the authors, and contradict American and British recommendations that pregnant women should limit seafood and fish consumption to avoid potentially high levels of mercury.
