Dead or Alive?

Dec 02 2008

It seems that the medical fact that you can’t be revived after being dead for more than a few minutes is not completely accurate… The video on the sidebar shows the woman who seems to be perfectly fine. Amazing.

A West Virginia woman is at the Cleveland Clinic after walking the line between life and death.

Doctors are calling Val Thomas a medical miracle. They said they can’t explain how she is alive.

They said Thomas suffered two heart attacks and had no brain waves for more than 17 hours.

I had to re-string a standard set of LED lights to work on 12 volts – it was a huge pain but it turned out pretty well.

Green LED Tree

Nov 28 2008

Our new tree uses only 32 watts of power (checked with a Kill-A-Watt).
Based on some tests I did, it looks like a standard tree would use
well over 200 watts.

DSL Modem Firmware Hack

Nov 20 2008

After a few hours of tinkering (mainly going through my old stack of PC’s to find something that was old enough to actually work with the flash updating software) I can attest that the process below actually does work.

It has been mentioned in this forum that the MSN DSL1000 modem was a rebranded ACCTON, and that SMC also had a model based on the Accton model. My primary purpose in attempting this stems from the fact that my speakeasy dsl install kit doesn’t come until next week, and my roommate used to have msn broadband. I have successfully installed and configured the SMC Barricade 7401BRA firmware on the MSN DSL1000. This is a quick and dirty documentation of my method, and what you might encounter if you choose to make the switch.

Adobe Flash Unlikely on iPhone

Nov 18 2008

So sad… Apple is a love/hate thing for many…

Allowing Flash — which is a development platform of its own — would just be too dangerous for Apple, a company that enjoys exerting total dominance over its hardware and the software that runs on it. Flash has evolved from being a mere animation player into a multimedia platform capable of running applications of its own. That means Flash would open a new door for application developers to get their software onto the iPhone: Just code them in Flash and put them on a web page. In so doing, Flash would divert business from the App Store, as well as enable publishers to distribute music, videos and movies that could compete with the iTunes Store.

Why Apple Won’t Allow Adobe Flash on iPhone

What is Inventables?

Oct 30 2008

I’m involved with a company called Inventables, and people wonder what its all about it… here’s their presentation from TED back in 2005 when I met them for the first time. Check out their 18-minute presentation below:

They’re also featured in the new Discovery Channel TV show – Prototype This! in their Design room. There’s a short video about them there as well:

GSM Phone Interference

Oct 30 2008

This is a great discussion about the 850mhz GSM phone interference I’m sure everyone has heard by now…

If you own an iPhone, it’s more likely than not that you’ve run into this obnoxious sound, at one point or another. Put your iPhone next to a clock radio or too close to a phone, and you may find yourself serenaded by the iPhone staccato symphony. You don’t even have to have the radio turned on, just having it close to the speaker is good enough.

Why your clock radio is all abuzz about your iPhone

Carbon Footprint

Oct 14 2008

Since I’ve become a Green Mountain customer my estimated environmental impact has been:

Pounds of CO2 Avoided: 14811
Trees Planted: 1008
Miles Not Driven: 16457

And thats just my home electric service. Not even switching all my cars to 100% electric would have saved me that much carbon!

WPA/WPA2 broken – VPN Only now

Oct 12 2008

WPA2 is officially broken now… so much for that. Looks like you should exclusively use VPN connections over wifi now.

“Russian security firm Elcomsoft has released software that uses Nvidia GPUs to speed up the cracking of WPA and WPA2 keys by a factor of 100. Since the software allows them to network thousands of PCs, this anouncement effectively signals the death of wireless networking in business networks; any network handling sensitive data should start using VPN encryption on machines connecting over Wi-Fi networks, or stop using these networks altogether.”

Tivo comes to the PC

Sep 29 2008

Woah – hell has frozen over!

Nero Liquid TV: TiVo for your PC

Starting in mid-October, however, people can turn their Windows PCs into a full-on TiVo DVR thanks to Nero’s new Liquid TV package. The software effectively turns a standard PC into a full-service TiVo DVR, replete with the same interface, program guide, and ease-of-use as TiVo’s standalone hardware DVRs–but with the added ability to burn recorded shows to DVD or export them to portable devices such as the iPod or PlayStation Portable.

Here’s the link to the product page at Nero’s site: Nero LiquidTV™ | TiVo® PC

iTunes causing Windows crashes

Sep 12 2008

As Apple mocks Microsoft for its crashing operating system, perhaps its interesting to note that iTunes may be the culprit?
