The upside of hurricanes
I wasn’t familiar with Gulf ‘dead zones’ until this article… I guess there’s some good that comes of hurricanes.
The oxygen-starved “dead zone” that forms every summer in the Gulf of Mexico is a bit smaller than predicted this year because Hurricane Dolly stirred up the water, a scientist reported Monday.

New! Windows Mojave
When people are told that there’s a new version of Windows called Mojave (ie, Windows Mojave) and people get to play with it, they love it!
The reactions when they find out its actually Vista are priceless…
The “Mojave Experiment” – http://www.mojaveexperiment.com/
Its been a year or so since Vista came out… perhaps its time to try it again.
Most of my complaints stemmed from driver support and application support (ie, iTunes didn’t work in Vista the first few weeks Vista was released, for instance)… did they ever get Synergy working in Vista?
hmm…

Caloric Restriction
It appears that can make anything into a pill…
Caloric Restriction Comes in a Pill
Scientists have provided the strongest evidence yet that the anti-aging benefits of calorically restricted diets can be duplicated — minus the near-starvation — by a pill.

Houston keeps popping up in the news lately…

100% Web-based Email
Today is the day I’ve made the switch to 100% web-based email. Specificallly, I’ve migrated all of my email accounts (and domains) to Google Apps.
Goodbye Exchange… (well, I’m still using Exchange/Outlook to sync my calender and contacts for the time being).
My PC is currently uploading all my old mail (dating as far back as 2002 – which is when I made the switch to Exchange/Outlook) to Google using the Google Email Uploader. Which is a bit slow going since it says it’ll take almost a whole day to complete…. but hey, its about 6 years of email and its free so I probably shouldn’t complain. 🙂
What draws me to web-based email?
- Its free and easy. I don’t have to maintain it… it works… and it works on any computer I walk up to that has a browser.
- Search – its fast and it works. The search on Outlook (even Windows Desktop Search) is slow and clunky and it freezes up the program while its searching.
- Threading. I’ve gotten spoiled with treading on the Gmail interface… I used to use it all the time with Eudora (which reminds me, maybe I should import all that mail from 1993 to 2002 into gmail as well). And now I can have it back with Gmail. (Ya ya, I know that Outlook has threading but it just doesn’t work as well for some reason).
- Mobile – the Google guys got it to work on mobile pretty well… you can choose POP3, IMAP, a mobile web browser, or even their Java app. So basically most phones with internet access can access Gmail.
- Switching computers. I’ve been working from a larger number of computers these days… back and forth from laptop to work and home PC’s… borrowing a few minutes on a buddy’s machine… trying out a new set up or even a VM… so installing Outlook and tweaking it the way I like takes hours to do… no more!
YMMV but it works for me and now I can move on and spend my time and money on things more interesting. 😀
Now what to do about contacts and calendaring… hmmm…

Houston is booming…
Related o my post from last week – Houston #1. Now, Newsweek reports:
Houston’s good fortune is largely a function of the current oil boom. But this isn’t the type of gusher that led to busts in 1981 and 1986. Instead, Houston is experiencing a 21st-century boom fueled by a weak dollar and global growth. “Three things affect Houston’s economy,” says Patrick Jankowski, vice president of research at the Greater Houston Partnership: “the price of energy, the value of the dollar and the strength of the U.S. economy at large.” As Meat Loaf said, two out of three ain’t bad.

Houston #1
This is making the rounds all over the ‘net so I figured I’d post it too… 🙂
It’s the city of big plans and no rules, beat-the-heat tunnels and loop-the-loop highways, world-class museums and wiry cowboys, humidity that demands an ice-cold martini and the biggest damn liquor store on the planet. How could you not love Houston?
