So many people have been asking about the car I’m taking to the Gumball 3000 that I figured I’d make a blog post about it.
Behold the Cadillac XLR-V I’m taking:
Some minor drive-train mods were done… including a cold air kit, a computer reprogramming, and an exhaust bypass switch… with those mods I should be pushing north of 500bhp and its much more fun to drive with the changes:
Blinder M25 laser jammers were installed in the front:
And in the rear:
Inside, I have a Valentine One radar detector, a Uniden BCD396XT radio scanner, a Midland 75-822 CB radio, and a Garmin nĂ¼vi 760 navigation unit with FM traffic and Trapster data loaded in it. (You’ll also see the cradles for the Blackberry’s on the dash as well.)
Oh, there’s also a small Linux computer recording the GPS info (lat, long, alt, speed, and heading) and a webcam taking shots every second of the road ahead – but I’ll write more about that later in another post…
Things that didn’t make it were the new sway bars and headers I ordered but ran out of time to install…
Finally it was picked up and transported to Santa Monica for the start…

pretty sure its in good hands.

I set up a little Linksys NLSU2 (aka, "slug") to take a snapshot of
the road ahead every second and tag it with GPS data.

If you have an extra $10k, you too could have it play the theme song…

If these guys deployed this in 2005, they must’ve been working on it since 2003 – thats over five years ago… these guys show great technical leadership.

This video is a bit long at 5mins, but the cameo of the C64 at the end is probably worth it!

The suction cups on my Escort 8500 X50 have been dying… every so often I’d come up to my truck and find that the radar detector had fallen of the windsheild. After some searching online, I learned that the cups that come from Escort are terrible – everyone complains about them… and new replacements from Escort aren’t any better and pretty expensive.
Then I learned that you can by generic suction cups from a craft store and use those instead… they are significantly less expensive at just a few bucks and work better than Escort’s:

And the finished product:

Twitter? That was sooo yesterday!

WA3USG has one SERIOUS radio shack… wow!
