Great quotes of Beavis and Butt-Head

Aug 12 2010

So MTV is planning on bringing back Beavis and Butt-Head, and they’re wasting no time starting their marketing…

The year was 1993, and it seemed that all America wanted was some T.P. for its bunghole.

Luckily, two men were up to the task. Seventeen years ago, “Beavis and Butt-Head” debuted on MTV, running for four years and sending a whole nation of lawmakers into a frenzy about The State Of America’s Youth. Turns out they had reason to be concerned. In 199 episodes and one feature-length movie, Beavis and Butt-Head aimed a flickering glow at what we were to become, predicting, in all their lazy, snarky, acne-smeared glory, the Internet Generation.

Before there were LOLcats and Failblog, there were two guys on a couch talking about butts and making dumb jokes at everyone else’s expense. Nothing was sacred. Everything sucked. Especially adults.

The desktop is NOT dead…

Aug 09 2010

I have been reading John Dvorak’s column since I was 10 – and even back then I thought he was spot on… 🙂

The computer has sadly become what pessimists always said it would be—a mere appliance. The fact that it’s come down to this really galls me.

I’ve always been the biggest proponent of powerful desktop computing and always felt like I was paddling against the tide. For the last decade I kept hearing about how the computer is becoming an appliance, and that mobile devices will rule the tech world. It’s true, for surfing the Internet you can use anything from a dumb terminal to a phone. You do not need a quad-core machine with a two-terabyte drive.

I still cannot believe that the computer can ever become an appliance any more so than an automobile can become one. Yes, if they designed a car with a road sensor, and there were metal stripes that the sensor could follow, allowing the car to drive itself, then okay. But nobody is willing to do that.

The same holds true for computers. They don’t drive themselves. Even the rather easy-to-use Mac requires a little user knowledge and intervention unless all you are doing is turning it on and getting on a browser and then the Internet. But you do not need much of a machine to do that.

Why the Desktop Gets No Respect, and Should

Android may now be #1

Aug 05 2010

Google is just rock’n it!

Apple’s growth is still significant, but many now believe the company’s exclusivity deal with AT&T has become a liability in the US. With the safety of knowing the iPhone wouldn’t be available on other major networks, Google has made Android the premier smartphone platform at Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, in many cases pushing the BlackBerry aside.

Great article about Valet Parkers

Aug 03 2010

Everyone knows I hate Valet Parkers – it seems like such a nice luxury, but I rarely have a positive experience with them…

It can be nerve-wracking handing your car keys to a total stranger at a valet station. You don’t know if they’re responsible drivers, what their definition of “gentle” is, or often where your car is headed. If all parking valets were trustworthy, there wouldn’t be a need for the “valet key” that prevents one from opening the trunk and glovebox.

When we decided to delve into the secret life of valet parking attendants, we expected some stories about concealed door dings, petty theft or occasional hijinks behind the wheel. But we had no idea the extent to which some valets routinely take liberties with their customers’ property.

Pitchmen back next season without Bily Mays

Jul 30 2010

I wonder if the show will be the same without Mays… 🙁

Pitchmen, the Discovery Channel reality series about infomercial pitchmen starring Anthony “Sully” Sullivan is returning next month, but without one key element: the late Billy Mays.

There’s BPA on store receipts! Yikes!

Jul 28 2010

Good to know that BofA ATM receipts are clean… 🙂

People interested in limiting exposure to bisphenol A — a hormone-mimicking environmental contaminant — might want to consider wearing gloves the next time a store clerk hands over a cash-register receipt. A July 27 report by a public-interest research group has now confirmed many of these receipts have a BPA-rich powdery residue on their surface. But you can’t tell which ones on the basis of a visual inspection.
