Control your bladder and make better decisions

Mar 11 2011

Weird…

What should you do when you really, REALLY have to “go”? Make important life decisions, maybe. Controlling your bladder makes you better at controlling yourself when making decisions about your future, too, according to a study to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science

Full Bladder, Better Decisions? Controlling Your Bladder Decreases Impulsive Choices

Introducing the Thermal Diet

Mar 04 2011

This facinating… watch the video below:

The part about swimmers vs marathon is telling…

Michael phelps eats 12k calories a day… but a marathon only burns 2600 cal

Water is 23x more thermally conductive than air and the water is sucking the heat out of you while your body is fighting it…

The science sounds solid… I wonder if it really works.

Everyone should make their own preference cards for things

Mar 02 2011

I thinks its nuts that so many people don’t have preferences for things… people say “Medium”… “I’ll have what your having”… “Whats the most popular?”…

Cummon people!

The other day, when I was listening to a presentation on organ donation, the speaker made reference to a surgeon’s “preference card” – a term I’d never heard.

“What’s a ‘preference card?’ I whispered to the person sitting next to me.

In Which I Create ‘Preference Card’ for Myself

Ham Radio still thrives despite the internet

Feb 23 2011

Interesting read…

Somehow it makes little sense that amateur “ham” radio continues to thrive in the age of Twitter, Facebook and iPhones. Yet the century-old communications technology — which demands such commitment that you must generally pass an exam to receive a license — currently attracts around 350,000 practitioners in Europe, and a further 700,000 in the United States, some 60 per cent more than 30 years ago.

Why Ham Radio Endures in a World of Tweets

Bear Hibernation == Suspended Animation?

Feb 18 2011

I’m finding that there are a few definitions of suspended animation… here’s one:

In early winter, brown bears find a comfy spot in a cave or burrow that’s well-protected from the cold. Then they curl up, fall asleep, and don’t awaken or eat for 5 to 7 months. It’s called hibernation, and until now we weren’t really sure what happened in bears’ bodies during that time. How could they survive for half a year without food? Today, Science published the first comprehensive study of bear hibernation, which revealed that many of our assumptions about it were wrong.

What will suspended animation really be like? A new study offers hints.

The difference in features between GSM and CDMA

Feb 17 2011

I had no idea you couldn’t put a call on hold on CDMA… funky…

iPhone supports many phone features, including call waiting, call forwarding, and conference calls. Depending on your wireless carrier’s network technology (GSM or CDMA), there are different methods for enabling and using these features.

Dumbphones dominate – not iPhones or Android

Feb 11 2011

I’ve known this to be true for some time, but now there’s finally an article about it…

Its interesting to think that most of the people who read my blog have smartphones, and seeing people without a smartphone is probably a rare thing… but its clear we are the minority – dumbphones still rule the market.

Of the 234 million cell phone users in America last year, a dominating 73 percent own traditional (aka non-smart) devices, according to market researcher comScore. Despite their more popular mindshare, intelligent devices like the Apple iPhone and phones based on Google’s Android operating system own barely a quarter of the market.
