A few years back I met Dave (you know, friend of my other friend Dave) just by chance as he flew thru’ the lobby of the building I was standing in (ya, with Dave)… and I we hadn’t communicated much since then… until that Facebook got a hold of us…
If you don’t know who Dave is, here’s a classic clip of him… (no not that Dave, the first Dave). 😉

Top Gear Reviews The Tesla Roadster
I think the best part is when he says that you should get two – one to drive, and one to charge… so much for the 200mile range (which was lowered from 250 already)
Is Apple *really* Green?
Apparently Dell is a little peaved that Apple is claiming to be green…
Several Dell folks were surprised and perplexed to see Apple’s new “green” MacBook ad since its release last month and we’ve been watching the discussions in the blogosphere. After chatting with our environmental teams about the topic, we realized that instead of ignoring it, we should have a conversation about the real meaning of being green from the viewpoint of a Fortune 500 company

The Latest on Caloric Restriction
I’ve written about Caloric Restriction in my blog here before a few times… and the more I read and learn about it the more interesting it is… the basic thought is “To live longer, eat less.” Read more in the article below:
In a laboratory at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, Matthias is learning about time’s caprice the hard way. At 28, getting on for a rhesus monkey, Matthias is losing his hair, lugging a paunch and getting a face full of wrinkles.
Yet in the cage next to his, gleefully hooting at strangers, one of Matthias’s lab mates, Rudy, is the picture of monkey vitality, although he is slightly older. Thin and feisty, Rudy stops grooming his smooth coat just long enough to pirouette toward a proffered piece of fruit.

Surface Mount Soldering 101
It seems that more of my projects need some soldering done as of late… and of course, more of that soldering is leading me to surface mount work. Although my soldering skills are pretty good, the surface mount work is a bit of a challenge. Here’s a video I found that makes it look “oh so easy”. 🙂
Wireless Keyboards = BAD
This was inevitable, but only 256 keys? cummon!
if you sniff the handshake, you can decrypt the keystrokes. You really don’t have to though; there are only 256 possible encryption keys.

FastCompany
It appears I was quoted in a Fastcompany blog entry today….
2008 was the year that Web 2.0 became more mainstream. More ad agencies, businesses, and non-profits used Web 2.0 tools as a way to build community and relationships, cross promote products and issues, and integrate their online and offline marketing strategies. Some like Zappos were extremely successful and nailed their Web 2.0 strategy while others like the makers of Motrin were burned by mommy bloggers for not doing proper research on their target audience. With the economy in a slump and budgets being cut in traditional print and TV advertising campaigns many will be looking to the Web 2.0 world to reach their constituents. So what should be on your Web 2.0 radar for 2009? Web 2.0 gurus give you the low down.
UNetbootin
How to boot CDROM ISO images from a USB thumb drive…
UNetbootin allows for the installation of various Linux/BSD distributions to a partition or USB drive, so it’s no different from a standard install, only it doesn’t need a CD. It can create a dual-boot install, or replace the existing OS entirely.

Dell DVD Burner Issues
I’ve been having really weird issues with my DVD burner in my Dell – sometimes I could burn a disc, other times I’d make coasters… after some searching I found out that the Dell drive is a rebranded Samsung drive.
Dell TSST TS-H653B to Samsung SH-S203B crossflash
If you have a TSSTcorp TS-H653B drive in your Dell, I highly recommend you do this crossflash to get your drive to perform properlly.

Dead or Alive?
It seems that the medical fact that you can’t be revived after being dead for more than a few minutes is not completely accurate… The video on the sidebar shows the woman who seems to be perfectly fine. Amazing.
A West Virginia woman is at the Cleveland Clinic after walking the line between life and death.
Doctors are calling Val Thomas a medical miracle. They said they can’t explain how she is alive.
They said Thomas suffered two heart attacks and had no brain waves for more than 17 hours.

Mapple on Simpsons
Behold the Simpsons mocking Apple and Steve Jobs in the videos below. (videos updated to Hulu after the Youtube versions were taken down.)
Decorated Truck
I had to re-string a standard set of LED lights to work on 12 volts – it was a huge pain but it turned out pretty well.

Green LED Tree
Our new tree uses only 32 watts of power (checked with a Kill-A-Watt).
Based on some tests I did, it looks like a standard tree would use
well over 200 watts.

DSL Modem Firmware Hack

After a few hours of tinkering (mainly going through my old stack of PC’s to find something that was old enough to actually work with the flash updating software) I can attest that the process below actually does work.
It has been mentioned in this forum that the MSN DSL1000 modem was a rebranded ACCTON, and that SMC also had a model based on the Accton model. My primary purpose in attempting this stems from the fact that my speakeasy dsl install kit doesn’t come until next week, and my roommate used to have msn broadband. I have successfully installed and configured the SMC Barricade 7401BRA firmware on the MSN DSL1000. This is a quick and dirty documentation of my method, and what you might encounter if you choose to make the switch.

Adobe Flash Unlikely on iPhone
So sad… Apple is a love/hate thing for many…
Allowing Flash — which is a development platform of its own — would just be too dangerous for Apple, a company that enjoys exerting total dominance over its hardware and the software that runs on it. Flash has evolved from being a mere animation player into a multimedia platform capable of running applications of its own. That means Flash would open a new door for application developers to get their software onto the iPhone: Just code them in Flash and put them on a web page. In so doing, Flash would divert business from the App Store, as well as enable publishers to distribute music, videos and movies that could compete with the iTunes Store.

What is Inventables?
I’m involved with a company called Inventables, and people wonder what its all about it… here’s their presentation from TED back in 2005 when I met them for the first time. Check out their 18-minute presentation below:
They’re also featured in the new Discovery Channel TV show – Prototype This! in their Design room. There’s a short video about them there as well:

GSM Phone Interference
This is a great discussion about the 850mhz GSM phone interference I’m sure everyone has heard by now…
If you own an iPhone, it’s more likely than not that you’ve run into this obnoxious sound, at one point or another. Put your iPhone next to a clock radio or too close to a phone, and you may find yourself serenaded by the iPhone staccato symphony. You don’t even have to have the radio turned on, just having it close to the speaker is good enough.
