Buy memories, not stuff

Posted in Ramblings on August 31st, 2010 by Richard Yoo

Good advice…

SHE had so much.

A two-bedroom apartment. Two cars. Enough wedding china to serve two dozen people.

Yet Tammy Strobel wasn’t happy. Working as a project manager with an investment management firm in Davis, Calif., and making about $40,000 a year, she was, as she put it, caught in the “work-spend treadmill.”

So one day she stepped off.

But Will It Make You Happy?

Helium shortage coming, running out in 25 years

Ouch – my kids may never know what a party balloon is!

Apparently, the world is running out of helium. Robert Richardson, a Nobel Prizewinner, believes that helium supplies will run out in 25 years. And since no other substance has a lower boiling point than helium, this could be a problem.

I never really micro-blogged… my twitter account is just a fancy RSS feed for this blog… I felt that twitter and the like was a “throw away” medium… just cast it out there and people may or may not read it… Looks like Leo agrees…

Kids need more outside activity

Posted in Ramblings on August 20th, 2010 by Richard Yoo

Its funny, I used to play outside for hours growing up… but now, I can’t stand the heat outside…

It’s hard to imagine my childhood without the neighborhood park.

I was always under the rosy assumption that every kid grew up knowing the joys of a local playground. But it turns out that only about one in five kids live near parks.

Health officials have concluded that this may be one reason why so many American kids are overweight — there’s nowhere closeby for them to run around, play and get exercise (whether intentional or unintentional).

Lack of nearby parks, playgrounds one reason why children are obese, health officials say

Antibiotics are becoming useless – are we doomed?

Posted in Ramblings on August 17th, 2010 by Richard Yoo

I’ve stopped using as many antibacterial products in my home as I can… apparently it didn’t do much good. :/

Just 65 years ago, David Livermore’s paternal grandmother died following an operation to remove her appendix. It didn’t go well, but it was not the surgery that killed her. She succumbed to a series of infections that the pre-penicillin world had no drugs to treat. Welcome to the future.

The era of antibiotics is coming to a close. In just a couple of generations, what once appeared to be miracle medicines have been beaten into ineffectiveness by the bacteria they were designed to knock out. Once, scientists hailed the end of infectious diseases. Now, the post-antibiotic apocalypse is within sight.

Are you ready for a world without antibiotics?

Great quotes of Beavis and Butt-Head

Posted in Ramblings on August 12th, 2010 by Richard Yoo

So MTV is planning on bringing back Beavis and Butt-Head, and they’re wasting no time starting their marketing…

The year was 1993, and it seemed that all America wanted was some T.P. for its bunghole.

Luckily, two men were up to the task. Seventeen years ago, “Beavis and Butt-Head” debuted on MTV, running for four years and sending a whole nation of lawmakers into a frenzy about The State Of America’s Youth. Turns out they had reason to be concerned. In 199 episodes and one feature-length movie, Beavis and Butt-Head aimed a flickering glow at what we were to become, predicting, in all their lazy, snarky, acne-smeared glory, the Internet Generation.

Before there were LOLcats and Failblog, there were two guys on a couch talking about butts and making dumb jokes at everyone else’s expense. Nothing was sacred. Everything sucked. Especially adults.

The desktop is NOT dead…

Posted in Ramblings on August 9th, 2010 by Richard Yoo

I have been reading John Dvorak’s column since I was 10 – and even back then I thought he was spot on… :)

The computer has sadly become what pessimists always said it would be—a mere appliance. The fact that it’s come down to this really galls me.

I’ve always been the biggest proponent of powerful desktop computing and always felt like I was paddling against the tide. For the last decade I kept hearing about how the computer is becoming an appliance, and that mobile devices will rule the tech world. It’s true, for surfing the Internet you can use anything from a dumb terminal to a phone. You do not need a quad-core machine with a two-terabyte drive.

I still cannot believe that the computer can ever become an appliance any more so than an automobile can become one. Yes, if they designed a car with a road sensor, and there were metal stripes that the sensor could follow, allowing the car to drive itself, then okay. But nobody is willing to do that.

The same holds true for computers. They don’t drive themselves. Even the rather easy-to-use Mac requires a little user knowledge and intervention unless all you are doing is turning it on and getting on a browser and then the Internet. But you do not need much of a machine to do that.

Why the Desktop Gets No Respect, and Should
